The National Institutes of Health's All ofUs Research Program issued a funding announcement today for Genome Centers togenerate genotype and whole-genome sequence data from the samples submitted byparticipants in the program.
The information produced by the GenomeCenters will become an important component in the program's precision medicineresearch platform, the agency said. The program plans to fund up to two GenomeCenter awards in 2018, with analyses to begin in the fall. Applicants mayrequest funds to generate and analyze genotype data from 100,000 participantsin the first year while also beginning to sequence whole genomes from thesubmitted biosamples. In the remaining years of the anticipated five-yearproject period, applicants may request funds for whole-genome sequencing for asmany as 200,000 participants annually, NIH added.
Applications will be evaluated on teams'technical approach, plans to scale up operations, capabilities to operate aclinical validation laboratory, experience, past performance, and costproposal, as well as other considerations related to programmatic priority.
The agency said in March that it anticipated making a funding announcement in May, inanticipation of the launch of All of Us in the spring.
Applications for funds are due on July 12.
All of Us is also planning a pilot study inthe coming months on the responsible return of genetic information toparticipants, which will include education and genetic counseling, as part ofthe program's commitment to make all participant data available to participantsthemselves, NIH said.
